The shark attack survivor and competitive surfer shares her must-haves for a well-rounded life.

It's been almost nine years since the Halloween morning when surfer Bethany Hamilton lost her arm in a shark attack near her home in Hawaii, a story made famous by last year's biopic film Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb. A testament to her physical and mental strength, the athlete was back in the water just months after her ordeal—and she's been there ever since, placing high in surfing competitions like the U.S. Open of Surfing and the ASP World Junior Championships. Hamilton is happier and healthier than ever, so we caught up with the surfer to find out her secrets. Here, her ten must-haves:

1. Friends and family: "My family has taught me so much and has helped shape me into who I am—I love my family! Without friendships I think life wouldn't be nearly as exciting; I have been blessed with amazing friends that support me and make life exciting and unpredictable."

2. My 5'9 Channel Islands surfboard: "I take my board with me as much as I can. The colors are awesome – I like to draw on it or have my friends draw something creative on it. Surfing has given me more confidence and it’s my favorite thing in the world to do."

3. Bible: "My faith gives me love, hope and direction in life."

4. iPhone: "I like taking a lot of pictures so I always keep my camera phone with me."

5. Hanalei Bay: "I spend most of my free time in the ocean—it’s beautiful, refreshing, healing and exciting. I love everything about this beach: the warm water, relaxing in the sand, picking up shells."

6. Tennis Racket: "I went to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy and Nick personally gave me an awesome tennis racket. It’s my newest love in life; tennis is fun and challenging. I’d like to be a granny who plays tennis."

7. Coconut water: "I absolutely love coconut water! I surf for ZICO Coconut Water and it keeps me hydrated, which I need with my active lifestyle. Plus it’s delish (especially the chocolate flavor)."

8. Vegetables: "I absolutely love steamed broccoli. It’s great with a dash of sea salt, or sometimes with garlic sauce. I love having a meal with a ton of veggies because it makes me feel healthy and happy."

9. Exercise: "I love to exercise and when I'm not surfing, I like to work out, play tennis, hike, swim, walk and jog the beach. Keep it fresh!"

10. Vitamix Blender: "I probably use my Vitamix blender too much. One of my favorite smoothie recipes uses ½ cup ZICO coconut water; ½ cup almond milk, 1 small frozen banana, 1 pack pure Acai, and a few walnuts."
