You'd never put your board away without letting it dry, so why would you leave the beach without stretching after a good surf?

Yoga is a great way to improve flexibility, which in turn makes you a more agile and injury-proof athlete. Here, our friends from the upcoming YAS Yoga & Surf Retreat in Costa Rica (December 1-7, 2012) teach us three poses ideal for surfers:

Camel Pose
Improves the flexibility of the neck and spine and relieves backache.
How To Get Into the Pose
Come down to the floor on your knees.
Bring your legs hip-distance apart.
Tuck your toes back.
Bring your hands to your lower back.
Let your head and chest fall back.
Bring your hands to your heels. If you cannot reach your heels, then keep your hands on your lower back.
Bring your hips forward.

Upward Facing Dog
This is the same motion you use when you're getting up on the board.
How to Get Into the Pose
Lie down on your stomach..
Bring your legs straight back behind you.
Make sure the tops of our feet are on the floor.
Bend your elbows and place your hands by your hips.
Spread your fingertips wide apart.
Press into your hands to straighten your arms.
Lift your chest up and slightly back, if you can.
Keep your thighs active.
Press into your hands and the tops of your feet, see if you can lift your thighs off the floor.
Look straight ahead.
Hold for 30 to 45 seconds.

Warrior 3
This pose helps surfers with improving their balance.
How To Get Into the Pose
Stand Up.
Balance on your right leg.
Hinge forward at your hips.
Bring your left leg up to hip level.
Keep the knee of your raised leg facing the floor.
Bring your arms out in front of you. If this is too difficult, keep them by your sides.
Brig your body into a T formation.
Keep your hips squared and level to the floor.
Find a focus point in front of you.
Hold for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
Repeat on the left leg.

Upward dog, so good to open up the heart and chest and breathe deep in this pose. Nothing like a full body-breath to rejuvenate the whole self!

I love doing Down Dog on my long board in between sets!! And pretty much any deep forward fold action gets my surfer back, back in action!

My favourite pose would be the dolphin pose. Seems to stretch everything out considering the fact that I always have back pains.
