Since you're already taking October to improve your health for Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention month, why not add another initiative to the list: Surfrider Foundation and Rusty have partnered to kick off Raptober 2012, a month-long effort to education and inspire people to kick the plastic habit.
Every year, millions of birds, fish and marine mammals die due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastic. Studies have also shown that there may be harmful chemicals lurking in plastic products. But there are steps you can take to eliminate your dependance on plastics, like purchasing reusable water bottles and grocery bags.
As part of Raptober, the Surfrider Foundation is hosting the second annual "One Foot At A Time" plastic cleanup challenge. Just collect one square foot of trash from your beach or community and use the material to create a mosaic sculpture using downloadable templates from the Raptober event website. The best photos win gear from Rusty, including a new surfboard!
From October 15-19, if you buy or renew your Surfrider Foundation membership for $30, you'll get a recycled plastic wallet or bag from The People's Movement.
