Confession: I’ve never used powder. I’m just not a powder person. So imagine the thrill when I started hearing words like “glowy,” “dewy,” “luminous” everywhere, along with an unspoken shunning of powder. Now, I’m not saying everyone should avoid the beauty bag staple, just that I’m excited about all the newfangled ways we can now approach our complexions. For one, I’m totally stoked on BB creams, specifically Dior’s Hydra Life BB Cream with SPF 30, because it gives me a sense of all being right with my skin, even when I have blemishes galore.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. A clear, even, smooth complexion starts with what you put on your skin before any color at all. Hydration is probably the biggest key, at least to me. If your skin is dehydrated, it will never look plump, dewy and youthful. I swear by hyaluronic acid serums like Arcona’s Hydrating Serum and super light moisturizers like iS Instant Smoothing Gel. Hourglass’s new No. 28 Primer Serum pulls double-duty by offering lots of essential oil-derived hydration along with priming qualities.

The importance of primers cannot be underestimated when you want to achieve a very natural, luminous look without a ton of heavy caked-on cosmetics. Not technically a primer, Skyn Iceland’s new Pure Pore Minimizer works sans silicone to refine the texture and smoothness of your skin, so use it daily as the results are cumulative. Otherwise, if you know what undertones you have (red, yellow, etc.) you can find one of Smashbox’s excellent colored primers that will counteract those tendencies, giving you a supremely even base.

Another new product I’m super jazzed on is marula oil, a sort of miracle ingredient that’s dry in texture yet ultra hydrating. Try mixing a drop of the Leakey Collection’s Marula or Sunday Riley’s Juno Transformative Lipid Serum into your foundation or BB cream to get an out-of-this-world radiant glow. Just see if you can put away the powder and embrace a little luminosity—your skin will thank you.
