In these dwindling last days of our super-steamy summer, I’ve found myself more stoked than ever to experiment with the hottest neon shades of makeup. And my favorite place—besides my nails—to rock said pigment-packed formulas has quickly become my lips. Inspired by lipstick-filled runways including Thakoon and Nanette Lepore, I’ve been experimenting with bold colors that make a really strong statement, especially paired with almost nonexistent makeup elsewhere plus flawless skin and arches.
Although I don’t yet have the cajones to try blue (like at Richard Chai) or lime (at Mugler), I will say electric violet (try Tom Ford Violet Fatale) can be a lot of fun. My go-to hue when I want a pick-me-up has always been tangy orange, like MAC’s Morange or Givenchy Candide Tangerine, but all these vibrant lipstick looks have me springing into action to dip my lips into uncharted waters.
I’ve always been afraid of all pinks, for example, but the sherbet-pink at Nanette Lepore and the pretty neon at Milly are just too playful and cool to resist. Two new favorites are Revlon’s matte Stormy Pink and Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Fuchsia, and of course, Chanel always makes the best pinks—see Coco Pink, the favorite of FOAM Editor-in-Chief Sari Anne Tuschman.
I also used to steer clear of reds, but I’m now obsessing over NARS’ Heat Wave, which mimics the orangey-red matte look of Thakoon’s fall show. And although it’s far from neon—though equally intense—deep plum-red shades inspired by Donna Karan’s fall show are what I may be most excited about moving into fall. Best of all, like a good tangerine nail polish, I can always count on these vivid colors to make me look more tan and to cut my primp time in half!
