Call us crazy, but we miss the shamelessly bright blue eye shadow that dominated the ’80s and are always in search of a way to inject some of it into our modern-day beauty routines. With his Fall 2012 runway show makeup, Jason Wu is helping the cause. With a more current and slightly more subtle, though still statement-making ocean-y teal take on the electric blues of decades past, MAC designed a look that we’re totally coveting. “Think sapphire blue and emerald green as opposed to the bold and garish tones of the ’80s—a great alternative to a dark smoky eye and the perfect way to add a splash of color,” says MAC senior artist Neil Young.
To get that perfectly Pacific-looking smoky eye, Young recommends first lining the eye with MAC’s jet-black Eye Kohl in Smolder “to flatten the depth of the eye and elongate,” then blending MAC Powerpoint Pencil in Tealo over the upper lid and crease, adding more at the outer corners. To add depth, add shadow such as Bobbi Brown’s Blue Moon Long-Wear Cream Shadow or Laura Mercier’s new Belle Nouveau Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Turquoise. Then finish off the eyes with several coats of MAC’s just-launched Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash mascara on only the upper lashes.
Because the eyes are so major, keep the color on your lips and cheeks constrained to soft, natural pinks and peaches. A soft bronzing powder like Chanel’s new Lumiere d’Artifices Beiges is perfect for evening out the skin tone and giving a light glow, while Dior’s Lip Glow balm, NARS’ Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Buenos Aires or MAC’s clear Lip Conditioner finish the look off perfectly, keeping the focus squarely on the eyes.
