Foam Visionaries: Carly Brien of Pressed Juicery
Whether they're game-changing entrepreneurs or inventing a new way to give back, the we got the chance to chat with eight people putting the rest of us to shame. Here, the FOAM Visionaries, as interviewed by their mentors and collaborators.
After battling with weight and suffering the loss of her mother, Pressed Juicery co-founder Carly Brien decided it was time for a change—and to embrace her passion for health and wellness in entrepreneurial form. Here, her best friend Kate Mulling sits down with her to talk about her story, and their latest venture.
Kate: I know you didn't just wake up one morning and decide to open a juice bar, so what sparked that interest?
When I was in college, I had no idea about health, wellness or nutrition and I didn’t feel well at all. I was about 40 to 50 pounds overweight.
We used to talk all the time when you were abroad in Rome and I remember one time you called me and said, "I'm eating a baguette with butter and brie."
I do think there’s a time and a place when people should be able to indulge, but I don’t think emotionally or physically I was very happy. I took interest in losing some weight and went to We Care, a holistic heath and wellness center in Desert High Springs. I spent five days there and learned a whole new world of information about not eating refined sugars and carbohydrates and what juicing could do for your body. You won every single academic award in your department.
I moved to New York and I started working in entertainment publicity. I was continuing to lose weight, but I definitely wasn't really living a healthy lifestyle.
Just living in New York and being stressed is toxic.
Right about that time, my mom fell ill. I came home and started juicing for her. It took my interest in juicing to a new level. I decided to enroll in the Institute for Integrated Nutrition in whatever spare time I had. I was learning a lot of awesome things and trying to keep my mom comfortable during her process.
You had all these incredible session on the weekend with all these amazing teachers and you would come back and say "I read this amazing study about this indigenous culture and they have one food that's not indigenous that's processed and I learned about GHI..."
I think that’s when you realize you have a passion for something—you can’t stop talking about it.
I totally saw something come alive.
I moved back to L.A. and saw my mom through the last months of her life and at that same moment a couple of friends of mine had been wanting to start a business. I called to tell them that, and ironically or serendipitously they had already had the same idea.
I think the question that I had until I started juicing was: How is this going to change my life?
What I think worked for me personally was incorporating green juice into my life everyday. It made me feel so energized. I stopped drinking coffee and I started to only crave healthy food. I said to myself, “This is a magic concoction and it’s just the life force of these plants.”
What is next for Pressed?
We are continuing to expand and bring juices to more people. On that side of things it’s exciting and moving along. Then you and I have our new lifestyle site The Chalkboard, which is based on the philosophy of Pressed Juicery: getting back to your roots, and living a good, well balanced life.
