If there were ever a good reason to play hooky for the beach, this is it: June 20 marks the Surfrider Foundation's 8th Annual International Surfing Day. What began as a handful of dedicated surfers hitting the waves has evolved to include 200 events in 30 countries across the globe.

This year, four-time Women's ASP World Tour champion and eleven-time ASP World Tour Champion Kelly Slater are the event's ambassadors.

"International Surfing Day is a day to take some time to appreciate this wonderful world we have and this incredible relationship we have with the ocean," says Slater. "For us, this should be our big holiday right up there with Christmas and Halloween and Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day."

They're determined to get their fellow surfers to make more positive and quantifiable change this year by singing up for local beach clean-ups and coastal restoration events. Last year's participants collected over 5,000 bags of trash worldwide!
