Dax enjoying the sun and sand of Fiji

"Last night the Fijian people who work at the resort we we're staying in treated us to a Kava Ceremony.

I was not looking forward to tasting Kava, and I was actually scared to try it, but I was excited about the ceremony. Getting a chance to experience another culture as they say their traditions with me is one of the things that I'm most excited to do as a surfer.

The Fijian Chief stared the ceremony. There was a lot of chanting and drumming that seemed to be praising the beauty of the island and thanking us for traveling from all over the world. I was the first to have to drink the kava, and all I could think is 'Why me?!' It did not taste good at all. It was like dirty water that numbed my mouth, but it was nice to be a part of something so special.

Next they prepared a giant feast for us of some of their local dishes. Many of those were similar to foods we have at our Hawaiian luaus!

To end the night, the Fijian women and man danced and sang for us. There we were under the stars on a little island in Fiji, hearing women with the most beautiful voices. This is my first stamp on my passport and it's exactly what I dreamed of."
