Tough as Sails

Visitors and locals alike know the kaleidoscope of color swirling along Maui’s North Shore. The problem is, the bright kite sails that dot the shoreline eventually color a different landscape: the local landfill. Lucky for us—and the environment—designer Kristine Hoffman has translated the sails’ eco-unfriendly quality (relentless durability) into the key behind our latest beach bag of choice. Collecting both barely used and woefully maltreated sails, Hoffman and her team of sewers whip the nylon and plastic sheets into splashy totes—perfect for both on the beach and off.
