The old adage is true—it really is better to give than to receive. This is especially true during the holidays when gift giving is at an all-time high. Through the midst of holiday shopping and lavish parties, the holidays also serve as the perfect time to reflect and to give back to worthy causes. Here are two youth-focused organizations that are changing the lives of children through action sports and creative writing.

The Chill Foundation

The Chill Foundation is like no other. The nationwide organization introduces underserved kids to action sports like snowboarding and surfing through six-week programs lead by volunteers. For many of the children, the first time they visit the mountains or the ocean is through Chill, which uses sports to help the participants develop patience, responsibility, confidence and life skills that are essential for personal growth.

Based in Los Angeles, WriteGirl is a nonprofit that pairs professional female writers with young girls that want to explore creative writing. In addition to pairing girls with weekly mentors, WriteGirl holds interactive workshops each month geared toward introducing the girls to various forms of writing. From the journalism workshop where the mentees participate in a mock press conference to the dialogue workshop where celebrities perform the girls’ work, WriteGirl uses creative writing to help the girls develop high self-esteem. WriteGirl also produces an award-winning anthology of the girls’ work every other year, so the mentees are published authors before they graduate high school!
