YouTube darling Tori Kelly is ready to take her music mainstream.
Can Internet musicians really translate their online popularity into successful music careers? 21-year-old California native Tori Kelly is banking on it. A former American Idol contestant who competed in season 9 of the music competition reality show, Kelly gained even more attention thanks to her YouTube channel, where her covers of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” and Justin Timerblake’s “Suit and Tie” each racked up tens of millions of views. Nearly 1 million YouTube subscribers and more than 83 million channel views later, Kelly is hoping that success rubs off on her original pop and r&b-tinged songs, many of which were released last year on her EP called Foreward. Kelly puts her acoustic guitar skills to use on her own material, peppering her smooth, mellow vocals with a distinctive, subtle folk vibe. Her track “Paper Hearts,” shown in the video below, is a great example of her unique style:
So what’s next for Tori Kelly? Fresh off of a stint on Sam Smith’s UK In the Lonely Hour tour, Kelly has tapped Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande’s manager Scooter Braun to take her promising career to the next level. With that kind of guidance and a raw, genuine talent, Kelly is well on her way.
