For most, surfing is a way to escape the daily grind. For some, it's a way to escape to a better life.
For best friends Fabio and Naama, young men living in the slums of Rio de Janerio, a trek to Copacabana Beach for a surf means traversing through dangerous free-fire zones, the turf of rival surf gangs and favelas ruined by unemployment, drug trade and crime-related death.
But it all seems worth it for a shot at escaping a life of poverty– the boys are given surf lessons from top professionals on one condition: They must attend school regularly.
Space 15 Twenty is hosting a screening of the Rio Breaks documentary. Come out this Friday for drinks from Umami Burger, DVD and t-shirt giveaways!
