Kate Thompson

With apologies to Michelle Obama, up-and-coming jewelry designer Kate Thompson is known as the “First Lady of Feathers.” The self-proclaimed hippie wild child earned the nickname through her nature-inspired jewelry and modern-day headdresses that are worn by everyone from folk singer Devendra Banhart to Ke$ha (who donned Thompson’s feathered earrings on the red carpet at the 2010 Grammys). Thompson started the line after designing accessories for Lucent Dossier’s avant-garde circus show. Her assignment was to create something from fake hair, bones and feathers—and the rest is history. From neck-grazing, two-toned feathered earrings to dramatic headbands embellished with small animal skulls, the pieces still feel more exotic-zoo than haute-design-house—in the best possible way.
